FOR IMMEDIATE
RELEASE
February 23, 2001
A Fast Growing
Collective of Women Campaign for Awareness for Female Artists Ladyfest*East
Emerges With a Calendar of Live Performances And Their First CD Release
(28 Days Records)
New York,
NY - Sisters are doing it for themselves once again! In April 2001,
the first Ladyfest*East compilation was released on 28 Days Records.
The compilation is in support of Ladyfest, a non-profit community
dedicated to supporting and promoting the artistic talents and activism
of women. The two CD compilation features an eclectic mix of female
musicians based in the northeast. Tracks include singles from many
indie girl rock and pop bands as well as experimental electronic pieces
and spoken word. Proceeds from the CD go to RAINN (www.rainn.com),
Rape Abuse and Incest National Network), Artemis Community Development,
the Ladyfest*East organization and Flywheel (www.flywheelarts.org),
a collectively run, non-profit space that aims to build a community
and give artists the opportunity to craft. The 2-CD set is available
online through www.cdbaby.com and the Ladyfest*East website, ladyfesteast.org.
Ladyfest*East
will feature an East Coast based lineup of musicians and other artists
and is one of four Ladyfests around the world, all promoting the same
girl-positive message. In keeping with the original Ladyfest theme,
Ladyfest*East is producing a, nonprofit festival that will include
workshops, panels and dance parties, all devoted to forming a closer
community of women while encouraging the artistic, organizational
and political talents of participants. The Ladyfest*East festival
will be held September 6 - 9, 2001 in NYC and will feature many of
the artists on the compilation. The festival has its roots in the
August 2000 Ladyfest festival in Olympia, Washington, which featured
such top rock bands as Sleater-Kinney, the Butchies and Bratmobile
and attracted some 2,000 fans.
Several Ladyfest*East
benefits have been held in preparation for the September festival.
A Ladyfest*East CD release party and benefit took place on Wednesday
April 18th @ New York City's legendary rock venue, Meow Mix. The show
featured live sets by NYC bands that have been volunteering their
time and contributing their music to the Ladyfest East project. In
addition to NYC, a Ladyfest*East fundraising event featuring New England
bands and artists took place on May 12th at the Linwood Grille in
Boston. Benefit shows are also being planned for Atlanta and Rhode
Island (www.ladyfesteast.org for updated information). Proceeds from
these events will go to RAINN and the Ladyfest*East organization to
help raise money for the festival.
The Ladyfest*East
compilation was produced by the members of the band Moxiestarpark
and is being released on their vanity label 28 Days (www.moxiestarpark.com).
